Halloween candy calculator

How much candy do you need for trick-or-treaters? Set your numbers and get pieces and bags to buy, with a buffer built in.

Use last year's count if you have one. If not, a preset below is a rough starting point, not data.

Pieces per trick-or-treater

Most porches hand out one or two. Full-size bars? Leave it at one.

Buffer

Extra for big groups, siblings who come back around, and the late teens. Leftovers keep; going dark at 7:45 doesn't.

Check the label on the bag you're buying. Variety bags range a lot, from a few dozen pieces to well over a hundred.

How the math works

Trick-or-treaters × pieces each, plus your buffer, rounded up to whole pieces. Divide by the pieces in one bag and round up again. That's it. The hard part isn't the math; it's the first number.

Don't know how many to expect?

Almost nobody does, and that's why bowls run dry. Your count depends on your street, your sidewalks, how many houses near you light up, the weather, and what day Halloween falls on. Nothing online can tell you your porch's number. We wrote up what actually drives it.

The reliable way is to count once. Tap once per kid this Halloween, and next year this calculator starts from your real number instead of a guess.
